THE GAME
Every week new customers turn up at the counter with their finds. Treasure or trash? The magnifier searches each piece for clues for as long as the customer's patience lasts. An appraisal brings clarity, though it can be wrong too. Then you buy outright or take the piece on consignment, and Will B. Heir & Son, the rivals across the road, have often made an offer already.

In the catalogue you set the opening bids and the order of the lots. In the saleroom you run the sale yourself: paddles go up, the telephone rings, you choose the increment, warm up the room and bring the hammer down. Sometimes the press sits in the back row, sometimes the power fails and only the torch finds the paddles.

In the workshop you lend a hand yourself: take off old varnish, glue broken china, retouch losses, tighten screws. Your house grows with your reputation, in five tiers from backyard to palace.
